We are all already self leaders. Maybe on the whole we are very poor self leaders but the science is there; we all have agency and can decide how much autonomy, engagement and alignment we display in anything we do.
Self-Leadership is the art of owning, balancing and optimising your autonomy, engagement and alignment in everything you do.
Your brain (Neuroscience)
Your application in anything
Your joined upness in anything you do
Lack of understanding, support and management of self-leadership leads to many downstream challenges that can absorb time and resource trying to resolve.
Some downstream challenges to poor self-leadership include:
Let’s explore low self-leadership and impact through a couple of examples:
Scenario 1
Imagine you are on a walk with some friends in the countryside and you make a comment “This is soooo boring, let’s go to the pub” and you use some emotional intonations to emphasise your boredom and how fun you feel the pub would be. In this short moment you are likely to trigger fight or flight responses in others – this can be masked in so many ways (disengagement (ignoring), quiet quitting (resolved to where it goes but won’t come along next time), conflict responses (insults, degrading comments etc.), facial expressions… the potentials are endless). Potential impact – break up of an activity, disruption in a group of friends, impacted mental health etc.
This example is replayed over and over again in billions of different settings with billions of different scenarios. The constant will be an emotional trigger in you and how you manage that and the impact on others and how they manage themselves.
In the scenario we are imagining a low understanding, management and support of self-leadership (Autonomy, Engagement, Alignment) in everyone.
In a setting with high self-leadership the likelihood of someone emotionally expressing themselves without considering impact on everyone and what collectively you are trying to achieve is reduced significantly. If you deemed the root cause of your thoughts/emotions as important to what you want to achieve as a group you will find a way of aligning the message; for instance “Hey guys, I’m going to break off and catch up later as I really want a drink and take a break as I’m exhausted, is that ok with everyone?” as an example of so many potentials that are less likely to trigger fight/flight responses.
Equally in high self-leadership environments when someone does express their emotions directly there is the respect and understanding the emotional burst wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t important to the individual and the next logical step is to explore together and decide next steps, does that feel reasonable?
Scenario 2
Imagine you have a friend who keeps turning up to their job late and it is so obvious to you this is going to have a negative impact. You make a few remarks about them being late but see no correction. You reach a point and can’t hold back any longer and blurt out “Are you serious, you’re going to lose your job, what are you doing?”, you use some emotional intonations to emphasise your frustration and how obvious you feel it is.
In this short moment you are likely to trigger fight or flight responses in your friend – this can be masked in so many ways (disengagement (ignoring), conflict responses (insults, degrading comments etc.), facial expressions… the potentials are endless). Potential impact – break up of a friendship, disruption of a network of connections/activities, impacted mental health etc.
This is a scenario we see time and time again when we feel responsible for performance in others, the setting and the individuals involved may vary but the impact we see is common.
It is an example with low understanding, support and management of self-leadership.
In a setting with high self-leadership the likelihood of someone judging someone else is reduced significantly. There is respect for others and their actions and the fact they are self-leaders in their journey. The focus would be on why there is the constant arrival at work late, not in a judging tone but in a curiosity – “I know you’ll be most likely deciding to get there late, are you? And if so how come? I would have thought you might get fired, right?” Equally in high self-leadership environments when someone does express their emotions there is the respect and understanding that the emotional burst wouldn’t be happening if it wasn’t important to the individual and the next logical step is to explore together and decide next steps, does that feel reasonable?
