Understanding HPTM: The High Performing Team Member Self-Leadership Framework

The HPTM Self-Leadership Framework is a scientifically-based structure developed to support optimal human performance by maximising brain health and achieving organic engagement and alignment. It is a foundational programme for anyone seeking assurance that the right components are in place to support their personal and collective potential.

The Core Components of the Framework

HPTM Self-Leadership is grounded in two essential interconnected systems: the BTFA™ Neuroscience Programme and the HI-PB’S™ Metacognitive Autonomous Systems.

BTFA™ (Believe, Think, Feel, Act) Neuroscience Programme

This foundational programme replicates the brain’s wiring and firing mechanisms, making complex neuroscience concepts easy to translate for everyday function.

  • Focus: It establishes a common language register for understanding and respecting how the brain works, especially its default tendency toward ‘fight or flight’ when expectations are not met.
  • Impact: By understanding that your thoughts and feelings are constant (because your brain is a “supercomputer” geared for efficient survival), you move beyond instantaneous emotional reactions to act based on consideration. This is achieved through structured reflection, which helps to ‘rewire’ the brain.

HI-PB’S™ (Honesty, Inclusiveness, Purpose, Balance, Structure)

These are five metacognitive autonomous systems that represent the relationships we have in everything we do. Managing these five relationships jointly and equally is the ‘engine’ that supports maximum brain health and allows individuals to manage their Autonomy, Engagement, and Alignment effectively.

Purpose Our relationship with why we do anything. elieve 100% in everything you do by aligning your actions with significant personal value. Full belief releases energy and ensures proactive, superior thinking.
Balance Our relationship with our own conditions, priorities, and needs Prioritise ourselves fully and actively manage competing priorities and conditions; suppression is not recommended.
Structure Our relationship with how anything is done, including systems and environments. Embrace all structure and help it evolve, viewing it as supportive rather than restrictive or oppressive.

HPTM Self-Leadership in Practice

The HPTM framework is implemented across three layers, helping to foster human performance and positive outcomes at every level

Individuals

For individuals, HPTM is all about constant self-reflection (metacognition) to achieve full control of one’s journey and perspective.

  • Own Your Autonomy: You must first understand yourself—your brain mechanics (BTFA™) and the five relationships (HI-PB’S™)—to take responsibility for your performance.
  • Structured Reflection: Use tools, such as the Tribe365® app, to facilitate structured reflection and daily sentiment check-ins. This ensures you update your view of the world and avoid defaulting to primal, self-serving behaviours.
  • Unified Persona: By managing yourself effectively, you bridge the gap between your work and personal life, enabling you to be the same consistent ‘operator’ in both spaces, reducing friction and conflict.

Teams

Teams utilise the framework by focusing on two key areas: Support and Shape.

  • Support Individuals: The team’s role is to constantly reinforce the five HI-PB’S™ systems within every team member. This includes creating an environment where:
    • Offloading is encouraged instantly, even if it leads to conflict, because it only takes one person with self-leadership to unpick a problem.
    • Inclusiveness means constantly looking for opportunities to grow and develop together, not for blame or threats.
    • Balance is reinforced by ensuring everyone is encouraged to manage their own priorities and prioritise themselves fully, without fear of negative reactions.
  • Shape Direction: Leaders work with the team to align deployed systems, such as their team structure or processes, ensuring they are shaped together, agreed upon by everyone, and aligned with the overarching purpose. The team should constantly explore and contribute to the evolution of all structures around them.

Organisations

The framework allows executives and senior leaders to safeguard the environment for sustained human performance.

  • Understanding and Configuring Systems: Executives gain the understanding of how brains and the HI-PB’S™ relationships work, enabling them to ensure all organisational systems are configured to support brain health
  • Measurement and Safeguarding: Organisations can measure the HI-PB’S systems to gauge how well they are working. Metrics may include:
    • Honesty: Measuring the number of risks, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats contributed to the organisation’s risk register.
    • Inclusiveness: Conformity with the Inclusiveness policies etc.
    • Purpose: Alignment with the organisational purpose etc.
    • Balance: Measuring daily sentiment and its fluctuation to decide where extra support is needed.
    • Structure: Measuring conformity etc.
