Self-Leadership

Own Your Autonomy

Most of us are more autonomous than we act like. Owning your autonomy is the decision to lead yourself on purpose: to choose your response, your focus and your next action, even when the situation is outside your control. It is the foundation of self-leadership, and it is a skill you can build.

The concept

What "owning your autonomy" actually means

This page explains what owning your autonomy means, why it matters at work and in life, and how the Tribe365® Self-Leadership Coaching App and the BTFA™ method help you turn the idea into a daily habit.

Autonomy is not doing whatever you like. It is Purpose-led Autonomy: taking ownership of your choices in service of a purpose you care about. Within the Tribe365® HI-PB’S™ model, this is the link between purpose and agency. The clearer your purpose, the more deliberately you can use the freedom you already have.

Put simply: the more deliberate you are, the more predictable and useful your results become. You stop being a passenger in your own week and start steering it.

Why it matters

Thrive Mode vs Survive Mode

Under pressure, it is easy to slip into Survive Mode: reactive, defensive, narrow. You protect rather than progress. Owning your autonomy is how you move back into Thrive Mode: open, deliberate, focused on what you can influence. The difference isn’t personality. It’s practice, small, repeatable choices that you can train.

This matters because self-leadership is the building block of team performance. People who lead themselves well show up better for the people around them, which is exactly what underpins a collaborative culture and what we develop in our work with HPTM® leaders.

How it works

How the daily 2-minute habit works

You don't build self-leadership in a workshop and hope it sticks. You build it the same way you build any habit: a little, often.

01

Check in daily

The Tribe365® Self-Leadership Coaching App is built around a 2-minute daily habit. Each day you check in and pause, on purpose.

02

Reflect with BTFA™

Reflect with a simple prompt, powered by BTFA™ (Beliefs, Thoughts, Feelings, Actions). BTFA™ helps you notice the beliefs and thoughts driving your behaviour, so you can change the action rather than just the outcome.

03

Compound over time

Two minutes a day is the point: short enough to keep, consistent enough to compound. Over weeks, deliberate self-leadership stops being an effort and starts being a default.

Where this came from

An idea grounded in practice and neuroscience

#OwnYourAutonomy began as a global initiative with the Association for Project Management (APM) People Interest Network, exploring how the Tribe365® High Performing Team Member (HPTM®) values help people perform at their best, including at distance and under pressure.

The work was later strengthened with leading neuroscience input, grounding the idea in how people actually think, feel and act. That evidence base now runs through the free HI-PB’S™ Workbook and the Self-Leadership Coaching App (£10/month).

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

It means leading yourself on purpose: taking ownership of your choices, focus and actions in service of a purpose you care about, rather than drifting or waiting for circumstances to decide for you. Tribe365® calls this Purpose-led Autonomy.

Independence is about not relying on others. Owning your autonomy is about being deliberate with the freedom you already have. It’s purpose-led: you use your agency in service of something that matters, which makes your results more predictable and useful.

The Self-Leadership Coaching App is built around a 2-minute daily habit powered by BTFA™ (Beliefs, Thoughts, Feelings, Actions). A short daily check-in helps you reflect and set a deliberate intention, so self-leadership compounds over time. The app is £10/month; prefer to start free? No. The idea grew out of work with the APM project management community, but owning your autonomy applies to anyone: individuals, managers and whole teams who want to lead themselves more deliberately at work and in life.
